Constant Friend

I don't know if you have left something off and always promised to do something about it but never got round to it - and then - when its too late regretted not taking a few minutes to sort it out. I have been meaning to write to a friend for some time putting it off - well the letter has gone. Its in the post and further more you can read it if you like!

12th December 2006

Dear ,

I am writing to say thank you for what you have done for me over the years and to express my deep gratitude for your friendship. When I lived and worked in Peterhead I used to spend hours down at the harbour, wandering around talking to people and watching the fishing boats plying their trade. Many a time I used the names of the various boats as points of reference when I preached in the Church. ‘Vigilant’, ‘Pathway’, ‘Devotion’, were but three but one name particularly could sum up what you have meant to me over the years and that would be ‘Constant Friend’!

I have thought about writing to you and acknowledging what you have done for me but have always left it off, but I feel I need to rectify that. I would never have believed in 1973 when I first met you, that our friendship would last for all these years. You have been indeed a constant friend – they really were great days. Your energy and enthusiasm for all things organisation have never ceased to amaze and encourage me, and no doubt many others. Your ability to deflate the most pompous has always been a source of enjoyment for me, many times witnessed by yours truly and enjoyed by others, not necessarily the recipient.

When, ten years ago, I dropped off the radar you again proved to be a constant friend. Over this period of time you have been, apart from M and my children, one of a few that I have actually had a conversation with which in any way has been encouraging and uplifting. Depression and isolation go hand in hand – they are like brothers – you have always been the same to me and I really appreciate it. My visits to ‘fix’ the computer are never irksome but always a pleasure! You are the reason for that!

The year 2006 will be noted for a number of things including the fact that you will be handing over the reins to others. It will probably be very difficult and a bit of a trial, nevertheless, you can rest assured that there is one sheep that will need to know that you are still around as his ‘Constant Friend’.

Yours

Peter C.
There are not many of these guys around! They are valued, because they don't discard or reject those that to all intents and purposes have slipped through the net.

Stumble or what?

I suppose like millions of others before me this is the first step. It might be the last step but a step never the less.
I have been reading a few blog sites and thought 'If they can post, then why can't I'. I might not have much to post but you never know.
No doubt this may take some time to master the fine details of what to do, but I have started.
You might wonder about the title of my blog - the Abbey Sanctuary - well its quite simple really - I was born and brought up immediately opposite this fine old building at the foot of the Canongate in Edinburgh. It still stands while the tenement building I lived in is gone - replaced now by the Scottish Parliament Building! Enough said, except £450 million and change! The Abbey Sanctuary, when I was growing up was used as a cafe for visitors to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Whenever I was asked where I came from I used to tell people that I lived just outside the palace gates, in fact the Queen was my next door neighbour! No one believed me! But it was true, to some extent, she lived in the palace and I lived at no 6 Canongate, although we were not really on speaking terms.
